Is your technology portfolio ready for 2027? 8 questions to ask

2027 planning is underway. Budgets are being decided. AI investments are expanding. Modernization programs are competing for resources. Technology teams are being asked what to consolidate, where to invest, what to standardize, and which risks need attention.

But before deciding what should change next year, there is a more fundamental question: How well do you actually understand the technology portfolio you have today?

For most large institutions, the challenge isn't a lack of technology data. There are CMDBs, ITAM and SAM platforms, architecture repositories, procurement systems, security tools, spreadsheets and business-owned records.

The challenge is turning all of that information into a current, consistent understanding of the technology estate. Today that understanding has an increasingly short shelf life.

  1. What do we actually have?
  2. What does it actually do?
  3. Where are we duplicating capabilities?
  4. What should we reuse before we buy or build something new?
  5. Where is AI entering the estate?
  6. What's approaching end-of-life?
  7. Which technology standards aren't being followed?
  8. What changed since our last review?
